I ran into a light I couldn’t find a profile for, with a pretty average manual. So I worked out all the DMX channels and wrote an unofficial manual.
There’s not even any model or descriptor on the light, so here’s all the details I found incase someone else tries googling the same words I did:
Model on the side of the unit: MINI 740
Model that’s the closest thing I could find online: MH-5A
Model according to the manual: 7Mee Moving Head or “7 Big Bee Eyes Dyed Beam Shake Head” (Yep.)
Model that comes up when you turn the light on: “7 MEE B.”
Model according to the System Information screen: APM-V9
Model according to RDM: ZOOM740
Model according to the AliExpress page: “MiNi LED 7x40W Bee Eye Moving Head RGBW 4in1 LED Spotlight Wash/Beam /Zoom,Professional DJ/Bar Lighting disco show stage lights”
The manufacturer is Foshan Jinqing Optoelectronics Technology Co. Ltd.
…. Yeah, 8 different model names. Have fun with that one!
First up, if you’re here just looking for the manual, click here to download it!
If you use an ETC EOS or Element lighting desk/software, here’s a fixture profile for all 3 DMX modes.
And a really quick review of things I found notable about this light (mostly not good though!)
- It’s loud – 52dB on idle, 56dB when the second set of fans ramp up (measured from ~1m away). This’ll suck unless you’re using it at a big loud party or something.
- It says it has 7x40W LEDs, I tested the power usage while it was running at 100% and it’s about close enough to that (more detials in the unofficial manual)
- Why can’t they just put a sticker on there with an actual model number? Other cheap brands do this and it makes it so much easier to just google for specs/DMX channels!
- Strobe must be at full for *anything* to happen. Usually strobe should be on 0. Brrr.
- Lens Rotation (aka. beams go everywhere mode) only works when you’re fully zoomed in. So you get moving squares instead of pretty moving blobs.
- It has powercon. This makes me happy.
- The pixel map effects are all over the joint in terms of how they work, it’s hard to dial in something that looks nice.
- The pixel map animation fade time is just on or off and it’s a bit glitchy – I like being able to do nice sunbeam like effects with this style of light, but the fade time is too fast and distracting to actually look right on stage.
- There’s 3 channels when you’re in 35CH mode that I can’t work out what they do. The manual says “Background Select”, “Shape Offset” and “Shape Transition”, but it has no effect on anything the light does.
If you’re using this as a wash light, just use 23CH mode. If you want pretty effects, set it to 51CH mode and pixelmap it to get effects that actually look good!
